Goulletquer, Philippe.
For some years, high mortalities on Manlia clam's breeding occured at the end of winter on Atlantic coasts. The ecophysiological survey of population was performed using a ground culture technique. This permitted to characterize the conditions related with mortalities such as a loss in dry weight and a decrease of metabolic reserves. A comparison of biochemical composition was conducted during the occurence of mortality on different sites along the Atlantic coast, and in different ecosystems (tidal land, oysters ponds).

This study aims to assess the broodstock origin and cultural effects on oyster summer mortality rates. Three oyster batches, two originating from the Marennes-Oléron Bay, and one from the Normandy rearing area were deployed in March 2000 on the Ronce Perquis oyster bank, on experimental site since 1996. On bottom cultured oysters were monitored until January 2001. By the end of the experiment, the cumulative mortality ranged from 51 to 58 %. Following on initial mortality rate (8.8 % to 9.3 %), oyster batches showed a critical period early July. In 15 days, mortality rate reached 13.7 %. Over the rearing period, the oyster shell growth ranged between 8.9 g and 12.7 g. The somatic gain represented 0.44-0.48 g of dry meat weight. Spawning event occured in...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Goulletquer, Philippe; Forest, Gwenaelle.

Mussel (Mytilus edulis) culture management along the Normandy coastline (France) : stock assessment and growth monitoring ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Joly, Jean-pierre; Le Gagneur, Eric; Ruelle, Francois.
The Normandy region is presently a leading shellfish rearing area in France yielding 35,000 metric tons of oysters C. gigas and Il,000 metric tons of mussels M. edulis on a yearly basis. Preliminary studies were initiated in 1989, 1991 and 1992 to develop the sampling strategy for cultured mussel stock assessment. Comprehensive mussel stock assessment and concomitant growth monitoring were carried out in 1993 to study mussel population and optimize overall s1l1ellfish culture management. A three-stage cluster sampling strategy combined with stratification was tested on the 278 kms 'bouchot' type culture with a sampling effort of 275 units. Stratification was based upon two criteria including geographical sector and tidal level. Overall biomass was...

Open atlantic coast of Europe - a century of introduced species into french waters ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Bachelet, G; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Noel, P.
This paper aims to establish a comprehensive Iist of exotic species introduced into Atlantic French waters over the last century as well as their origin, and the vectors involved in the process. At least 104 non indigenous species have been recorded in the Atlantic and Channel coastal wa• ters. Among those species, only a few (Bonamia ostreae, Crepidula fornicata) have resulted in highly significant negative impacts and side-effects on the coastal activity. In contrast, the introduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas can be considered to be successful, sustaining a large industry counting more than 4,000 companies and 150,000 tons of yearly production. Over the last decade, French and European laws have strenghtened the controls over exotic...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Geairon, Philippe; Razet, Daniel; Goulletquer, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Fouche, Dominique; Gras, Paul.

Optimisation of the traditional Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas Thunberg) culture on the French Atlantic coastline: autumnal fattening in semi-closed ponds ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Razet, Daniel; Faury, Nicole; Fouche, Dominique; Robert, Stephane.
Oyster farming in France is a traditional activity. Each year, 60,000 tons of C. gigas are fattened before being sold. Present-day fattening techniques for improving oyster taste and colour and increasing the meat weight are not particularly reliable. To optimize the fattening process, large phytoplanktonic blooms were induced in ponds, then distributed in oyster ponds. Despite the variability of the autumn weather conditions, diatoms (Skeletonema costatum) have been successfully cultured in outdoor ponds. During neap tides (when no seawater replenishes the water in the oyster beds), between mid-October and mid-December 1996, the fattening index (the weight of the meat) was constant or increased by 10-15% when a supplement of algae of 380.000...

Pacific cupped oyster - Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Boudry, Pierre; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Originating from the north eastern Asia, Crassostrea gigas is endemic to Japan, but has been introduced and translocated, mainly for aquaculture purpose, into several countries, almost worldwide (1). In North America, the species can be found from Southeast Alaska to Baja California, while in European waters the species is cultured from Norway to Portugal as well as in Mediterranean Sea (Fig.1) (2). Biological characteristics make it suitable for a wide range of environmental conditions, although it is usually found in coastal and estuarine areas within its natural range. Although highly variable, the invasiveness pattern of C. gigas has been demonstrated in several countries and therefore considered as a pest or a noxious species in those areas (3).

Performance of triploid Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) reared in high carrying capacity ecosystem : survival, growth and proximate biochemical composition ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Joly, Jean-pierre; Gerard, Andre; Le Gagneur, Eric; Moriceau, Jacques; Peignon, Jean-marie; Heurtebise, Serge; Phelipot, Pascal.
Triploid oysters Crassllstrea gigas were: produced in 1990 by treating fertilized eggs with cytochalasin B (CS). Triploids, treated diploids, and controls were deployed early 1991 in a high carrying capacity ecosystem on the Eastern Coast of Normandy (France). A monthly monitoring in 1992 showed that triploids yielded significantly higher growth rate and biochemical composition. However, growth was more heterogeneous. No evidence was found for a length or weight bimodal frequency distribution within triploid groups after a 26 months rearing cycle. Triploids showed retardation of gametogenesis. Carbohydrates content in triploids remained almost constant (40%) from June to September. Their survival rates were significantly lower than controls. Moreover...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Huvet, Arnaud; Le Moine, Olivier; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Robert, Stephane; Goulletquer, Philippe.
This study presents the zootechnical performances in their natural habitat, the Marennes Oléron Bay, of two Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata taxons of European and Asian origin, as well as those of their "European" hybrids (6 studied strains). Growth performance seems to be a phenotypic characterisation linked with the maternal origin (c. gigas or C. angulata). The Asian "pure gigas" or "pure angulata" strains' growth performances differ more from those of their European "sisters" than the European taxons with their hybrids. The C. angulata strain, of Taiwanese origin, does not survive the second culture week in the Marennes Oléron Bay. The C. angulata strain seems to "carry" a strong mortality potential.

Goulletquer, Philippe; Nedhif, Mohamed; Heral, Maurice.
The complete Manila clam's breeding cycle (Ruditapes philippinarum ) in oysters ponds (claires) permits to obtain a length of 25 mm after 1 year with a density range of 200 animals/m2 . As the primary production is restricted, the breeding biomass during the second year is limited to 500 g.m2 corresponding to a density between 30 to 50 clams..m-2. For an increase of the production it is necessary to extend the cultivated area to the tida1 bottom of the Bay of Marennes-Oleron. It appears that the man tidal level between + 2 and + 2.5 15 necessary with a density range of 200.m-2 to reach, the market size nine months later. The harvest sould be done before winter time to avoid a large 1055 of the flesh which can cause high levels of mortality.

Soletchnik, Patrick; Geairon, Philippe; Razet, Daniel; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The physiological ecology of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas was studied using a conditioning delayed by temperature. Experiments were carried out on five batches and 2 year-classes classified into 6 maturation stages. The scope for growth concerning the stages N*5 and 6 was nearly zero while positive for early stages as well as for the post-spawning stage. Moreover, the 1 year-old oysters showed a significant lowered scope for growth (-110 J/h) compared to adult oysters (-14 J/h), therefore demonstrating the increased sensitivity of young oysters to stressful environmental conditions. By comparing the experimental results with the current models, developed on immature oysters, facilitates the model parameters spécifications during gametogenesis. For...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Goulletquer, Philippe.

Potential environmental drivers of a regional blue mussel mass mortality event (winter 2014, Breton Sound, France) ArchiMer
Polsenaere, Pierre; Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Gohin, Francis; Robert, Stephane; Pepin, Jean-francois; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Dumas, Franck; Bechemin, Christian; Goulletquer, Philippe.
In the context of global change, increasing mariculture production has raised particular concerns regarding its environmental impact and sustainability. Molluscs and particularly blue mussel account for a significant part of this total production. Although blue mussels are considered as pretty resilient to environmental disturbances, we report in this study an unprecedented mussel mortality event that occurred during the winter 2014 in the Breton Sound. 9000 metric tonnes of mussels were lost and mortality rates up to 100% were recorded at some farming areas. Through a coupling approach, the present work aimed to better understand the potential environmental drivers associated to those mortalities. Firstly we analysed long-term in situ and satellite data...
